The area you choose shapes everything from how easily delegates arrive to what you will pay for dinner. These are the ones we source across most, and what each is good for.
South Wharf
The only precinct that does a plenary above 1,500 and a trade floor at the same time. Two hotels connect directly into MCEC, so the delegate experience is genuinely campus like.
Southbank
Crown puts the room block, the ballroom and the dinner in one complex, which is the strongest single site block in the city. Riverside walking connection to both South Wharf and the CBD.
CBD grid
Choose it when delegate free time is part of the value. Deep hotel supply at every price point, but no single property holds a large block, and the Metro Tunnel stations opened here in late 2025.
Docklands
Scale and a waterfront setting rather than a hotel one. Marvel Stadium anchors it for launches and very large receptions, with thinner accommodation than the CBD.
East Melbourne
A large single hotel block on the quiet edge of the city, with the MCG and Melbourne Park next door. Unusable in January while the Australian Open runs.
Carlton and Parkville
Character venues and anything with a university, research or cultural association behind it. Almost no hotel supply, so delegates stay in the city and tram across.

No destination is right for every brief, and the useful conversation is about where the limits are. These are the ones that change a Melbourne program most often.
January and March are difficult months
The Australian Open absorbs city accommodation for three weeks in January and puts the whole Melbourne Park precinct out of contention. The Formula 1 Grand Prix does something similar to March. Both are worth checking against your dates before you fall in love with a venue.
There is no airport rail line yet
Victoria’s own project page puts the first stage of Melbourne Airport Rail at 2030, so every fly in delegate is on a road transfer of roughly half an hour. For a genuine same day in and out meeting we would usually put Sydney or Brisbane in front of you.
One large ballroom is currently out of the market
Grand Hyatt Melbourne’s event floor is listed by the hotel as closed for upgrade works with no reopening date, while the guest rooms operate normally. It is worth knowing if a Collins Street ballroom was on your list from a previous year.
Melbourne is two markets, and most briefs only need one of them.

Every venue has something worth knowing before you sign. A difficult load in, a low ceiling, a pre function space that struggles once the room is full. You will hear that from us at shortlist, not on the day.
